40-Word Challenge

Something that we do periodically at the Golden Pen Writers Guild is take the 40-Word Challenge. We are given a list of 10 words plus a bonus word and must write a piece that is exactly 40 words in length—not 39, not 41. It’s an excellent exercise that helps you develop the ability to write economically and “tight”.

The additional rules are:

  1. You can use another form of the given word (i.e. if the word is music then you could also use musical, musically, musician, etc.)
  2. You can only use the 11th “Bonus Word” if you have used all of the 10 given words

Lots of fun!
