Something that we do periodically at the Golden Pen Writers Guild is take the 40-Word Challenge. We are given a list of 10 words plus a bonus word and must write a piece that is exactly 40 words in length—not 39, not 41. It’s an excellent exercise that helps you develop the ability to write economically and “tight”.
The additional rules are:
- You can use another form of the given word (i.e. if the word is music then you could also use musical, musically, musician, etc.)
- You can only use the 11th “Bonus Word” if you have used all of the 10 given words
Lots of fun!
