Today’s Quote: Cicero

Quote

“The budget should be balanced, the Treasury should be refilled, public debt should be reduced, the arrogance of officialdom should be tempered and controlled, and the assistance to foreign lands should be curtailed lest Rome become bankrupt. People must again learn to work, instead of living on public assistance.”

— Cicero, in 55 B.C.

I think this is a particularly trenchant quote at the moment, what with the bunch of morons in Washington flirting with disaster. We’re all going to pay, and pay dearly for their incompetence and I wouldn’t be surprised if the country is permanently damaged. And just look at what happened to Rome…

Summer Wars Goodies

I love anime and manga, but in general I’m not really a collector of all the other “Character Goods” and ephemera that go along with the stories. I do have a few figures, art books, pencil boards and so forth, but it never really caught on with me–it mostly seemed like a lot of extra clutter just taking up space and costing me money that was better spent on purchasing the actual shows.

However, every once in a while something catches my eye that I really want. This year, it was stuff from the incredible movie Summer Wars and specifically two items: a limited edition Hanafuda card set from the show and the newly released figures of Ikezawa Kazuma and his OZ avatar King Kazma.

Valencia Apple Store Grand Opening

I know that I live right across the street from the Valencia Town Center Mall. And I know that I had already heard that they would be opening an Apple Store there. But…

Imagine my surprise when I found out from a City of Santa Clarita tweet yesterday that the grand opening would be today! I guess that just tells you how often I bother spending time at the mall.

Updates to the dpkworldwide WordPress Site

As I mentioned in yesterday’s aside posting, I switched to a new theme for this blog and I’ve now tweaked it back into behaving properly. I really like the new look, especially the sans serif font and larger banner image sizes. Let me now if you think anything still looks weird…

In addition, I’ve beefed up the other pages here adding both to the About section with more about me and a quick bio, and the Anime section with a fuller explanation of my Anime-watching philosophy. You can access these pages from the menu above, just below the banner photo.

I will probably be adding more pages and other materials here since Apple’s announcement of iCloud means they will be doing away with the MobileMe web hosting I have been using. I plan on keeping some of my original web pages, especially business-related stuff, but it seems so much easier putting personal stuff here on WordPress.

Pardon the dust…

Aside

Now that I finally tweaked my WP blog to start looking pretty good, I discovered the new Twenty-Eleven template. I think I like it, but it is causing a bit of pain. I will need to redo my banner images (you know, the ones I just finished creating…).

Anyway, please standby as I play around a bit and see if I like it. I especially like the sans-serif body font and the greater variety of Post formats (seven of ’em!).
