Getting my leg back together

I FINALLY got around to doing something about my bad left knee—only a year and 8 months after my fateful Ventura-Ojai bike ride. The good news: I can get it fixed. The bad news: all the time I wasted and unnecessary pain I experienced.

So last week I finally went in for an MRI on my knee. This was a result of my getting fed up with the nagging pain in my left knee, the loss of mobility and the fear that I wouldn’t be able to sit in seiza position when I go to Japan. After several referrals, HMO scheduling games and a brief detour to a Rheumatologist (no sign of RA, BTW) there I was under the large, thumping monstrosity.

My greatest fear—more than finding a problem—was that they wouldn’t find anything wrong. I got the results this past Tuesday and sure enough I have a diagonally torn meniscus. GEEZ! I shoulda dealt with this ages ago (my original injury and x-rays were in May 2004 for cryin’ out loud…)

Anyway, I’m back in the HMO paperwork mill to schedule arthroscopic surgery to get it fixed. I’m given to understand that it’s a relatively straightforward, 45-minute outpatient procedure. I’m hoping to get it done sometime in the next 2-3 weeks to make sure I have adequate rehab time before Japan in mid-June. The doctor says I’ll be out of pocket for a couple days, then hobble around on crutches (which arrived on my doorstep yesterday) for about a week.

This is certainly good news, and I hope it truly does get me back to normal. I need to get back in the gym and hopefully back into either triathlon again or into a martial art.

Re-design of the re-design…

So I went through all the trouble of redesigning my website with this great new tool and get it looking good, but when I logged in from a stupid PC at the office, It looked like CRAP! So I had to go to another design that will hopefully ‘translate’ better. If everyone just used Macs…

So that made me more than a bit crabby. I had everything setup with basically the same ‘look’ but in different colors. Apparently, though, the formatting of those particular templates do not work out correctly when using that godforsaken, primitive browser called ‘Internet Explorer’ on a PC. This template (at least in the blue version with the starry sky) seems to have worked, so I’m switching over. Expect a few more days worth of frustration and venting though as I go through and clean it all up again.

Sheesh—it’d be nice if the visual world of the PC would catch up with MacOS X.

No more ‘us’

Five years was apparently long enough…

Broke up. Couldn’t take being ignored any longer or only getting it once in the last six months. Eusebio moved out over Labor Day weekend.

Time to start over—again…

My newest toy…

Anyone who knows me realizes I’m pretty much a gadget freak (which is really weird sometimes, since in other areas I’m definitely a luddite…). And what is the latest gadget on the market? The Sony PSP, of course. And—of course—I just had to buy one!

That in itself is also rather strange. I mean, I’ve never been particularly hooked on computer games. In fact, I think I’ve got a grand total of five games on my Mac—I just never had time, patience or interest.

But the PSP is AWESOME! The games are so much fun, the technology is first-rate and there’s a lot of potential for the platform. You can even watch regular, full-length movies on it—which will be much easier to deal with on the plane than pulling out my PowerBook (small as it is). I’ll be sure to try it out on my next business trip and post a report.

So far, I’ve got five games already and just had a blast tonight playing a round of golf with the Tiger Woods game. Lumines is also a lot of fun and very addictive—kinda like a super-Tetris. I’ve also got Wipeout Pure, a kind of sci-fi twist on the conventional car race game with flying spacecraft. More to come…

The other thing I’m anxious to try out is the realtime multi-player gaming via the built-in 802.11b wireless. That should prove interesting.

Check out the Sony site for all the particulars…

What? You mean someone’s actually reading this?

I just found out last night at my Japanese class that at least one of my classmates has been reading my blog. I was also reprimanded for not living up to my January 31st “New Years Resolution” entry to write more often. You can see how successful THAT was…

Anyway, it just seems that this is one of the lower priorities for me. When life gets too busy in all the other areas, that last thing I’m thinking of is putting things down online. However, I’ll try to be better. Domo arigato gozaimasu Chip-san.

A New Year’s resolution…

Hi and welcome to 2005. A New Year’s resolution I’ve made is to update my website and provide Blog entries more regularly. Wish me luck!

I’ve already begun the redesign process for my regular pages, and one of the things I want to leverage is the use of iBlog. I can communicate more effectively and quickly on timely topics plus keep people up-to-date on my comings and goings by being more diligent here. Look forward to new categories and material too.

Banzai!

Tonight I started my Japanese 1 class—I’m so excited!

Konnichiwa! Watashi no namae wa Kendrick desu…

And so it begins—my foray into learning the most difficult and challenging language of all those I’ve learned so far. I couldn’t believe how many people were there! I was 16th on the waiting list for the class and am lucky to have gotten in. There were about 25 people standing on the side hoping to add—there were still 15 or so sitting on the floor by the end of the night. Pretty wild.

The instructor, Yamaguchi Sensei, seems very dear. She’s also MAYBE 5 feet tall with a very soft voice. Her assistant, Sato-san, is a student from Japan who has been here for a few years. He’s cool, and I’m hoping maybe I can get him to be my senpai…

I just hope to do my best and make this productive. I haven’t been this excited about something in a while, and certainly haven’t tackled anything quite so challenging. It’s gonna be fun!
